QUESTION#2: Carmen’s Daughter
San Jose Opera have just completed their excellent run of Bizet's "Carmen". Who was Carmen's daughter, operatically speaking? What opera did she appear in and who was the composer?"
ANSWER:
You could say that Bizet’s “Carmen” was the first opera that attempted to portray a
“real life” or “Verismo” situation. No more kings and courtiers, Gods and Goddesses
or fairytales. The young Puccini was highly influenced by Carmen for his second opera
“Edgar”. The “good” girl in “Carmen”, Micaela, becomes Fidelia in “Edgar” and the
Carmen like character becomes Tigrana. Thus Tigrana is, sort of, Carmen’s daughter.
